Hermann Vogel

I love discovering the work of illustration artists. I find it exciting to learn about unknown artists and to find out about the art techniques that they used, the approach to composition, the influences that inspired them and so on.

Herm Vogel , Bilder-Geschichtenbuch, published by Braun & Schneider (year ?)

Just recently I have discovered the work of German Illustrator Hermann Vogel (16 October 1854 – 22 February 1921).

Hermann Vogel’s work is exquisite; I fell in love with it and immediately went and searched all that I could find that has been published about him.

Vogel published several books and illustrated books by Hans Christian Andersen, among others. His illustrations focus on children fairy tails and heroic German legends.

His art techniques included engraving, etching and, later in life, once color printing became cheaper and affordable to produce, ink and watercolors.

I follow Peter Beard’s marvelous You Tube channel and here’s the episode which includes Hermann Vogel’s biography.

In my search for books by Hermann Vogel (or book that include his work), I have found (and purchased) the following:

  • Herm Vogel, Bilder Geschichtenbuch, published by Braun & Schneider (in German and I cannot find the publishing date but it might be between 1900 and 1920).

  • Hermann Vogel, Album 1 by Belloloco . This French publisher has published 1 out of three albums dedicated to Hermann Vogel’s work. I do hope that Album 2 and 3 will be published soon.

  • Herm Vogel, C’Era una Volta- Published by Lo Scarabeo, 2010

  • C’Era Due Volte… Ballate e Racconti Tedeschi di un Secolo Fa Illustrati da Hermann Vogel, published by Lo Scarabeo, 1994 (see above for link).

  • Musaeus Volksmärchen der Deutschen, Musäus Johann K., A. und Hermann Vogel (1887)

  • Herm Vogel, Altes U Neues, published by Braun & Schneide. A copy of this book can be downloaded HERE

In some instances the artist is credited as Herm Vogel.

Hopefully I’ll be able to find more material about this artist, whose work I absolutely love.

I welcome any information that you might have about this wonderful artist.
